Pascagoula, MS – As the days of summer come to a close on the Gulf Coast, Mayor Jay Wills reminded residents and visitors there is still time to appreciate the rich natural resources that make Pascagoula a gem of the Mississippi coast. In his latest online message, Mayor Wills highlights the city’s unique geographical features and the wealth of recreational opportunities they offer.
“Pascagoula sits at a premier location situated between the Pascagoula River and the Mississippi Sound, offering a wealth of opportunities that shape our community’s identity and provide plenty of fun with endless opportunities for recreation and leisure,” the mayor noted. This strategic position between two vital waterways defines the city’s identity and offers myriad outdoor activities.
The Pascagoula River, often referred to by locals as the “Singing River,” is a focal point of the mayor’s message. As the longest free-flowing and last unregulated major river in the United States, it stretches over 80 miles and supports one of the most diverse freshwater fish faunas. The river’s wild and largely inaccessible nature allows it to serve as a sanctuary for numerous species, including 327 species of birds, alligators, herons, and the elusive Gulf sturgeon. Mayor Wills emphasized the river’s role in preserving the environment, describing it as “a living testament to our commitment to preserving our environment for future generations.”
On the city’s southern shore, the Mississippi Sound provides a stark contrast to the dense, green canopies of the river’s floodplains. This vital marine habitat is a playground for locals, offering activities like fishing, boating, and paddling. “For generations, our citizens and visitors have indulged in the opportunities these waters provide,” Wills said, underscoring the Sound’s importance to the community’s recreational life.
Mayor Wills stressed the importance of sustainable practices and community involvement to preserve Pascagoula’s natural beauty. “As we continue to grow and develop as a city, it is essential that we maintain our commitment to preserving the natural resources that make Pascagoula truly special,” he stated. The mayor encouraged all residents to engage with the city’s natural wonders this summer, whether through discovering new trails, enjoying water activities, or learning about the region’s history and ecology.
In his closing remarks, Mayor Wills invited everyone to explore and appreciate Pascagoula’s unique environment. “There is something for everyone to enjoy in Pascagoula,” he concluded, urging the community to embrace the natural beauty that forms the backdrop to their lives.
